I’ve been thinking about 2026 and its “Year of the Horse” energy.

There’s something unmistakable about it. It’s no longer the frantic speed we’ve learned to mistake for progress. It’s something older, something better. A horse can stand perfectly still, ears alert, eyes soft, and then move with total conviction the moment the timing is right.

As I look at the Horse from this perspective, my mind keeps drifting toward the tarot.

The card I keep seeing is The Chariot.

When I sit with it, I feel alignment. It has that feeling of knowing what I’m doing and why. This year, I want to move only because something in me has chosen a direction.

And here’s the image that won’t leave me alone:

A cushioned chariot.

This is not a chariot made for war, or built to prove anything. It’s a chariot designed to hold me. A vehicle that says: you can move forward and still stay with yourself.

I am not interested in “powering through” another year.

I don’t want success that costs me my sleep, my happiness, my appetite for life. I don’t want to arrive somewhere impressive and realize I left my body behind on the road. I want momentum that feels perfectly mine. I want progress that doesn’t require self-abandonment.

And I keep thinking: maybe that’s what The Chariot is really asking for: control as self-respect, and the ability to steer without punishing the horse.

We’ve been taught to treat the horse (the wild part of me, my instinct) as something that needs to be tamed. But this horse no longer wants to be broken; it wants a rider who is steady and present.

This year doesn’t feel like a year for pushing. It feels like a year for steering.

When the direction is true, the body stops fighting. When the path makes sense, you don’t have to force momentum; it gathers on its own. And in that movement, something surprising happens: momentum becomes kindness.

I’m done confusing ease with laziness.

Ease is not avoidance. It’s not the absence of ambition. Ease is what happens when ambition stops fighting with your values. It’s what happens when you choose fewer things, and do them with care. When you stop scattering yourself across ten almost-right directions and commit to the one that actually fits.

I have so much hope for the months ahead, and it doesn’t depend on everything going perfectly. It’s a grounded hope that comes from believing, finally, that the journey does not have to be harsh.

We can build a life where momentum and softness can exist in the same sentence.

So I’ll leave you with this question:

What would you choose to build in 2026 if you truly believed you were allowed to move forward with ease?

Maybe it’s time to take your seat and breathe.

I’ve been away for a couple of weeks, sorting out my physical life and dreaming about what’s next. A deep dive into how I want to live, what I want to bring with me into next year, and what I want to leave behind. Maybe you’ve been feeling this way too, looking for a way to make life a little simpler.

Those who know me well know that spirituality has been a big part of my life for the past decade. It’s slowly become part of everything I do: how I work, how I make decisions, how I rest. Minimalism. Unassuming beauty. Simplicity and authenticity at the core.

I’ve learned the power of intention, the magic of choosing a word for the year, and the importance of protecting my rituals: meditation, movement, sleep, good food. I just wish it hadn’t taken a serious burnout around this time last year for me to finally understand that boundaries are not optional.

I’m so committed to my clients, to my work, to my creativity. I’m sure you are too. But if we don’t take care of ourselves first, we can’t deliver our best. We can’t pour from an empty cup. I’m not all there yet, but I’m seeing the benefits of trying.

This Saturday, my husband and I complete ten years in Miami, after moving from New York City. New York was perfect for that season of my life. I learned so much: how to get things done, how to run a business, and sometimes how not to. It matched the fire in me back then, the overachiever who wanted to do it all.

Mid-forties now, in a slower city (yes, Miami can be slow if you know where to look), I’ve decided I no longer want to overachieve. I still want to achieve: client success, prosperity, peace of mind, joy, contentment. But I choose me first.

That might sound counterintuitive, especially in a world where everyone seems to be chasing something better. But what if right here is exactly where you need to be right now? I’m making peace with that thought and grateful it finally came here to stay.

This season isn’t about building higher or running faster. Maybe it’s about learning to stand still long enough to feel at home in your own life. That’s where I am, and it feels like a good place to begin again.

From here, I take the lyrics to notes on my desktop, refine them and decide the energy (and the voice) I want the song to have. I then do some prompt engineering and move to Suno, to experiment with beats, pace and create the final song.

Lu ‘s story wrapped in early October: nine chapters that let me experiment with layered storytelling, songs, and illustrations. Thank you to everyone who read along and made space for something new.

This past summer I also spent time with my 1998 diary, sharing pieces of it in my series called From the Beginning. There are many more diaries waiting in the wings, but this one felt like the right place to start. Reading through those pages turned into more than a writing project; somehow, it became a music album, too.

A couple of weeks ago, I released I Am The Season, a song about being 45, tending ground that doesn’t promise me anything, and learning that I am the season, rather than waiting for spring.

At The Copper Portico, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes: brand projects, design work, new collaborations. I’ll share more about those soon.

I spent August in the Brazilian winter, enjoying incredible meals, walks in nature, camellias in every stage. That time away from making helped me remember why I make things at all.

Lu woke to the sound of water running free.

The Spring of Clarity flowed without barriers now, its voice bright and laughing as it tumbled over stones that had been polished by countless paws coming to drink. Where Moss had once stood guard with tired eyes, now creatures from a dozen communities gathered to fill their vessels and share their stories.

She stretched her wings and let the morning light warm her fur. Six months had passed since the flower-light network had transformed the fear-factory into something new. Six months of watching connections grow like seedlings reaching toward sun.

"Lu." A small voice called from the water's edge.

Three young ones waited for her by the spring. A Stoneward youngster with serious eyes. A Willowkin child whose family had worked in the factory. And a fox pup with wings like her own, daughter of Keepers who had been scattered by the Winds.

"We brought questions," the young Keeper of Thresholds said.

"Good," Lu replied, settling beside them in the soft grass. "Questions are how gardens grow."

She let a flower bloom at her feet. Not bright and demanding like the old days, but patient and steady.

"My mama says I'm too soft," the Stoneward child said, his small hands clenched. "Says the world will hurt me if I keep trying to help everyone."

"Helping hurts sometimes," Lu agreed. "But not helping hurts more."

"How do you know when someone really wants help?" the fox pup asked. Her wings were small but perfect, catching the light like water. "And when they just want to take?"

Lu thought of Moss, still guarding the spring but choosing now to let people drink. Of Raven, who had helped her escape the floating islands and was slowly building new bridges between them. Of all the creatures who had been broken by kindness and were learning to trust again.

"You feel it," she said finally. "In the space between their words and their actions. In whether they reach back when you reach for them."

The Willowkin leaned closer. "But what if you feel it wrong? What if you help someone and they hurt you anyway?"

"Then you learn something about them. And something about yourself." Lu let another flower bloom, this one a little brighter. "Being gentle doesn't mean being foolish. It means choosing kindness even when you know it might cost you."

"That sounds hard," the Stoneward child said.

"Everything worth doing is hard," Lu replied. "Easy things don't change anything."

She stood and began to walk toward the old fear-factory grounds. Where control rooms had hummed with division, gardens now grew wild and sweet. Where barriers had kept people apart, pathways wandered between workshops where Willowkin and Stoneward worked side by side.

The three young ones followed, their questions trailing behind them like flower-light.

"The old threshold-keepers helped people cross between sleeping and waking," Lu said as they walked. "Between dream and day. But there are other crossings that need tending now."

She stopped at a place where two paths met. One led toward Wellspring, where the divided village was slowly remembering how to share. The other wound toward the floating islands, where Raven's new bridges swayed in the wind like promises kept.

"Between anger and forgiveness," she continued. "Between fear and hope. Between giving up and trying again."

"How do you tend those crossings?" the fox pup asked.

Lu smiled and let flowers bloom along both pathways. Small lights that would guide travelers who chose to journey between communities. Who chose to reach across old hurts and ancient fears.

"You make sure the path is there when people are ready to take it," she said. "You don't force anyone to cross. You just... keep the way open."

"Even if they never cross?" the Willowkin asked.

"Even then."

They walked deeper into the gardens, past the places where her family worked. Her mother teaching young Keepers how to weave thresholds from kindness instead of magic. Her father helping former factory workers build meeting halls where different communities could gather safely. Her sister Nira planting memory flowers that would bloom with the stories of those who had been lost to the Winds.

"Will it always be this hard?" the Stoneward child asked, watching a group of former enemies share their lunch beneath an apple tree.

"The choosing will always be hard," Lu said. "But the choosing is what makes it real. What makes it last."

She led them to the edge of the gardens, where the flower-light network stretched toward the horizon. Thin threads of connection reaching toward communities that were ready to trust again. Toward hearts that had decided hope was worth the risk.

"The Deep Groves are gone," she said quietly. "That easy world where everyone was kind because they had never learned to be cruel. We can't go back to that."

The three young ones looked sad, as if she had told them their favorite story had no happy ending.

"But this is better," Lu continued, letting flowers bloom at her feet. "This is connection that's chosen, not given. Trust that's earned through small acts repeated over time. Love that's strong enough to survive being tested."

"Will you teach us?" the fox pup asked. "How to tend the spaces between things?"

"We'll teach each other," Lu said, feeling the truth of it warm in her chest. "Because that's how it works now. Everyone sharing what they've learned."

She began to walk again, following a path that led away from the gardens and toward the wider world. Behind her, the three young ones followed, and behind them, flowers bloomed in the footprints she left in the earth.

But these flowers didn't mark where she had been. They lit the way forward, toward communities that were ready to risk connection. Toward hearts that were choosing hope over fear, one small decision at a time.

"Where are we going?" the Willowkin asked.

Lu spread her wings and felt the pull of distant places in her chest. Places where her flower-light was needed. Where someone was ready to learn that gentleness could be strong, that bridges could be built even across impossible gaps.

"Forward," she said, and meant it.

Behind them, the gardens grew. Tended by many hands, watered by tears both bitter and sweet, blooming with the stubborn truth that even in the hardest soil, beautiful things could choose to grow.

At the Crossroads, Lu placed her paws on the ancient stone and felt the pull of every pathway that had ever led creatures toward each other.

“Together,” she said to her three allies.

Willow’s healing magic flowed warm through the stone. Grove’s growing-wisdom sent roots deep into the earth beneath. Milo’s story-weaving wrapped around them all like invisible thread. And Lu’s flowers bloomed.

But not like before. These flowers bloomed with intention, with choice. Each one asked a question: Will you reach for connection? Will you remember what it felt like to trust?

The flower-light spread along the old pathways, flowing toward every community the Harsh Winds had divided. It moved like water finding its level, spreading across sleeping lands with persistence, offering possibility without demanding response.

“Look,” Grove whispered, pointing skyward.

Above them, ribbons of aurora light began to dance. Within the lights, images flickered like dreams, showing a Willowkin pausing at her door before leaving bread outside. A Stoneward mending a broken cart for a neighbor he hadn’t spoken to in months. Small choices, tentative steps across the divide that had seemed so permanent.

The network grew stronger with each connection, threads of light weaving between communities that had forgotten they belonged to the same world. But as it grew, so did the resistance.

The Harsh Winds howled with renewed fury, and Lu felt something vast and angry stirring in the north. Something that fed on division and grew strong from fear.

“The source,” she said. “It knows what we’re doing.”

They followed the network of light northward, past communities where people were taking their first careful steps toward each other. Past the floating islands where bridges of possibility flickered in the air. Past the poisoned spring where barriers were beginning to crack.

The complex rose before them like a mountain of glass and steel. It looked empty, not evil; a place where connection was perceived as contamination and trust as disease.

Inside, Lu could see them. Her family and dozens of other Keepers, trapped in cages that hummed with twisted magic. Their threshold-keeping abilities were being harvested, perverted, used to create the very barriers that kept the world divided.

But she could also see the people running this place. Ordinary creatures in expensive clothes, sitting around polished tables. They looked tired and afraid, convinced they were protecting the world from the chaos of connection.

“They’re not monsters,” Lu said, the realization heavy in her chest.

“No,” Willow agreed sadly. “They’re just afraid. So afraid of being vulnerable that they’ve built a system to make sure no one can ever trust anyone again.”

The flower-light reached the complex walls and began to seep through the barriers. Not breaking them—Lu had learned that force only bred more resistance—but offering a choice.

Lu spread her wings and used her threshold-keeping abilities, but not to tear down walls. Instead, she created bridges and paths of light that led away from the complex. Invitations for those who wanted to step away from their certainty and try something new.

Some workers paused at their stations, blinking as if waking from a gray dream. A few stepped away from their controls and walked toward the bridges of light.

Others pressed closer to their screens, wrapping themselves tighter in the belief that what they were doing was necessary, that without their careful management of fear, chaos would consume everything.

Lu let them choose.

The network spread through the complex like dawn through darkness. Control rooms became meeting spaces. Fear-factories became gardens. Barrier generators became threshold-gates that anyone could choose to cross.

Deep in the heart of the building, Lu found her family.

The cages were dissolving under the pressure of connection spreading across the territories. Her parents stepped through the fading barriers, their eyes bright with tears.

“Lu,” her mother whispered, pulling her close. “You came. You found another way.”

“We all did,” Lu said, feeling the network pulse with the combined hopes of every creature who had chosen connection over isolation. “Everyone who remembered how to reach for each other.”

Her father looked older, more tired, but his hands were steady as he reached for her. “The things they made us build... the walls between communities...”

“Can become bridges,” Lu said gently. “The same energy that creates barriers can create connection. It just depends on what we choose to build.”

Her youngest sister Nira looked small and serious, aged by her captivity but not broken. “Some people won’t want the walls to come down. Some people need them to feel safe.”

“Then we let them keep their walls,” Lu replied, understanding settling in her heart like a seed finding soil. “But we also make sure that anyone ready for connection can find it.”

The complex shuddered around them as the network of light transformed its very purpose. Some workers fled, taking their certainty to other places where fear might still find fertile ground.

Others stayed, blinking in the light of possibility, beginning to remember what it felt like to trust and be trusted.

“It’s not finished,” her mother said, watching those who chose to leave. “There will always be those who profit from division.”

“But there will also always be those who choose to reach for each other,” Lu said, feeling the flower-light pulse beneath her paws. “And now they have a network to connect through. Now they don’t have to reach alone.”

The Harsh Winds still blew in distant places, but they were no longer the only force shaping the world. The network of flower-light spread like roots through soil, not forcing anything to grow but making it possible for those ready to reach toward the light.

Lu looked at her family, freed but forever changed by what they had endured. At her allies, scarred but still choosing kindness. At the world around them, wounded but no longer helpless.

The network pulsed with infinite, patient hope. Connections forming between communities. Bridges spanning impossible distances. Hearts learning to trust again, one small choice at a time.

“What happens now?” Nira asked.

Lu smiled, letting flowers bloom at her feet. “Now we tend what we’ve planted. We help it grow. We prove every day that connection is stronger than division.”

The light spread onward, carrying the stubborn truth that even in the darkest places, love could choose to take root and flourish.

The Harsh Winds howled through the intersection with violent force, tearing at anything that tried to cross from one path to another. The air itself seemed angry, charged with the kind of energy that turned neighbors into enemies and friends into strangers.

But Lu wasn't alone.

Three figures sat in the shelter of an overturned stone marker, huddled together against the wind. As Lu landed nearby, they looked up with faces she recognized—changed by their journeys, marked by struggle, but still unmistakably themselves.

"Lu?" The voice was uncertain, weathered by months of walking dusty roads alone. "Is that really you?"

It was the small Willowkin from Wellspring—the one she'd seen in the distance when she first witnessed the village's division. But his traveling pack was more worn now, his eyes carried the weight of countless miles, and his small frame seemed even more fragile after months of wandering.

"I remember you," Lu said softly. "You were walking away from Wellspring when I first arrived. You've been traveling all this time?"

The Willowkin nodded, his voice low but steady. "I couldn't stay and watch neighbors turn against each other. So I started walking. Looking for... I don't know what. Somewhere the old ways still mattered, I suppose."

He gestured to his companions. "I'm Milo, by the way. I found these two along the way—or maybe they found me."

Beside him sat a small, gentle creature with healing-white fur and hands that glowed with dormant magic. This had to be the healer Kira had mentioned—the one whose gentleness was seen as naivety.

The third figure was vine-covered and earth-scented, with patient eyes that spoke of seasons spent watching things grow. He looked like someone who understood the old ways of cultivation: the type of gardener who knew that the best harvests came from cooperation, not competition.

"You're all here," Lu whispered, her flowers blooming despite the harsh winds. "But how—?"

"The same pull that brought you, I think," said the healer, her voice soft as morning rain. "I'm Willow. I spent months wandering, trying to find communities that still believed in healing without payment. But everywhere I went, the Winds had already whispered that kindness was weakness."

"Because this is where it's strongest," Willow said, pointing to the swirling chaos around them. "The Winds. They're most violent here because this is where connection used to happen naturally. Where different paths came together."

Grove nodded slowly. "They have to work hardest here to keep things separate. It's like... like trying to dam a river. The water wants to flow, so you have to build stronger barriers."

"But that means," Lu said, understanding dawning, "this is also where connection is most possible."

"Exactly." Milo's eyes lit up with the fire that had made him dangerous to those who profited from division. "This is the heart of it all. If we could somehow heal this place, restore the old flowing connections..."

"The effects would spread outward," Willow finished. "Like ripples in a pond."

They sat in silence for a moment, watching the Winds tear at the empty pathways. Lu could feel power building in the air—not just the Winds' destructive force, but something else. The combined hope of four creatures who had refused to let the world make them cruel.

"There's something you should know," Lu said, and told them about the memory caves. About the factory of fear, the captured Keepers, the systematic nature of what they faced.

When she finished, Grove's earth-covered hands were clenched into fists. "They're using your family's gifts to build the very barriers that keep us apart."

"And profiting from the suffering they create," Willow added, her healing magic flickering with rare anger.

"Then we tear it all down," Milo said, his storyteller's voice carrying new edge. "Fight fire with fire. Use their own methods against them."

Lu felt something dark and tempting stir in her chest. It would be so easy. So satisfying. To let her flower-light turn sharp and cutting, to use her threshold-keeping abilities to create barriers instead of bridges, to give the factory of fear a taste of their own poison.

The Winds seemed to sense her thoughts and howled louder, as if encouraging her toward that choice.

"I could do it," she said quietly. "I could turn my powers into weapons. Build thresholds that trap instead of free, create connections that control instead of heal."

"We all could," Willow said, her gentle hands beginning to glow with harder light. "I could twist healing into harm, help into manipulation."

"I could plant seeds that strangle instead of nourish," Grove added, his vine-covered arms trembling with restrained power.

"I could tell stories that divide instead of unite, words that poison instead of heal," Milo said, his voice gaining strength. "We have the power to fight them with their own weapons."

For a moment, Lu imagined it. The satisfaction of turning the factory's own methods against them. The swift justice of giving fear-mongers something real to fear. The efficiency of fighting darkness with darker darkness.

But then she looked at her three companions—really looked at them. Milo's eyes still held kindness despite months of rejection. Willow's hands still glowed with the desire to heal, even after being called naive. Grove still radiated the patient wisdom of growing things, even after being dismissed as inefficient.

They had all been broken by their journeys, changed by the cruelty they'd witnessed. But they hadn't been corrupted. They hadn't forgotten who they were at their core.

"No," Lu said, her voice growing stronger. "That's what they want. They want us to become like them. To abandon what makes us who we are."

"But how else do we fight a system built on division and fear?" Willow asked.

Lu spread her wings, feeling the aurora colors shimmer despite the harsh winds. "We stay true to what we are. We build connections instead of barriers. We heal instead of harm." She looked at each of them in turn. "We prove that another way is possible."

"That's a beautiful dream," Grove said gently. "But dreams don't topple systems."

Lu felt tears on her fur. She wasn't the only one. Across the territories, other Keepers were struggling to maintain their nature in a world that had forgotten how to be gentle. They were scattered, hidden, often working alone—but they hadn't given up.

These weren't monsters or demons. They were ordinary beings who had learned to profit from pain. Who fed the Harsh Winds with deliberate cruelty disguised as reasonable policy.

"Fear is a renewable resource," one of them said in the vision, adjusting his golden spectacles. "As long as we keep communities isolated and suspicious, they'll pay any price for the illusion of safety."

"The Keepers are the real threat," added another, her voice honey-sweet with false concern. "They make people believe in cooperation again. Dangerous thinking. We must capture them all, turn their abilities to our purposes."

The vision shifted, and Lu's heart nearly stopped.

Her family.

They were alive—her parents, her siblings, all of them trapped in gleaming cages that hummed with twisted magic. Their beautiful threshold-keeping abilities were being harvested, perverted, used to create barriers instead of bridges. Every wall of division in the territories bore traces of their stolen gifts.

Her mother looked older, sadder, but her eyes still held their gentle fire. Her father's strong hands worked constantly at the cage bars, never giving up hope of escape. Her siblings huddled together, sharing what comfort they could in their imprisonment.

"Lu," her youngest sister Nira whispered into the vision, as if she could somehow sense her watching. "Lu, we know you're out there. We feel your flowers blooming across the distances. Don't give up. Don't let them win."

The vision faded, leaving Lu alone in the memory cave with her thundering heart and blazing determination.

The Harsh Winds weren't a natural disaster. They were a weapon wielded by those who profited from division. Her family wasn't lost—they were being used, their gifts twisted into tools of separation.

And she wasn't alone. Across the territories, other Keepers were fighting the same fight, tending the same hopes, refusing to let their nature be corrupted or their hearts be hardened.

Lu pressed both paws against the cave wall and felt the ancient network of Keeper-memory flowing around her. Hundreds of them, maybe thousands, all connected by their shared commitment to building bridges rather than walls.

Immediately, she was surrounded by bird-folk with sharp spears and suspicious eyes. Their feathers were dulled by constant worry, their movements quick and fearful.

"State your business," demanded a fierce-eyed owl with scars across his beak.

"I'm just traveling through. I saw your islands and thought—"

"Spy," hissed a smaller sparrow-being. "Probably sent by the Eastwind Island to scout our defenses."

"Or the Stormcloud Isle," added another. "They've been eyeing our grain stores for weeks."

Lu looked around in confusion. "I'm not from any island. I'm just—"

"Likely story." The owl stepped closer. "Everyone belongs somewhere. And everyone who comes here uninvited is either a spy or a raider."

"But surely you help each other sometimes? Share resources?"

The silence that followed was heavy as stone.

"Help each other?" The sparrow laughed, but it sounded more like crying. "Child, we barely survive as it is. Every island hoards what little they have. One bad harvest and we're all fighting over scraps."

"It wasn't always this way," said a measured voice from the back of the group.

The other birds turned sharply toward a crow-like creature with silver-streaked feathers and keen, intelligent eyes. "Raven, don't fill her head with dangerous ideas."

But Raven stepped forward with the dignity of someone who had spent years being unfairly attacked. "It wasn't. I remember when the bridges connected all the islands. When healers could travel freely between communities, sharing knowledge and medicine."

Lu's heart jumped. "Healers?"

"Each island used to specialize," Raven continued, her voice carrying the authority of someone who had spent decades mastering complex systems. "Brightwind Isle grew the best healing herbs. Cloudrest had the wisest bone-setters. Stormwatch knew secrets of mind-medicine that could heal deep sadness." Her voice grew soft with the pain of watching careful work destroyed. "When someone was hurt or sick, we'd send them to whoever could help best. The bridges made it possible."

"The bridges made us vulnerable," the owl snapped. "Easy for raiders to attack, easy for disease to spread, easy for others to steal what was ours."

"The only thing the bridges brought was trouble," added the sparrow. "Now each island tends its own sick and keeps its own secrets safe."

Lu felt something cold in her stomach. "What happens if someone gets hurt and you can't help them here?"

The silence stretched longer this time.

"We do what we can," the owl said finally. "And if that's not enough..." He shrugged, as if loss was just weather.

"But people are dying who don't have to," Raven said, her voice breaking. "Last month, little Pip on our island got the wasting sickness. Cloudrest Isle had the cure; I could see their healers from here, close enough to shout to. But the bridges were gone, and no one would risk flying the gap to ask for help."

"Because Cloudrest might have demanded payment we couldn't afford," the owl said harshly. "Or worse, they might have seen our weakness and decided to take our island entirely."

"So Pip died," Raven whispered. "Died looking at the cure floating just across the sky."

Lu's flowers bloomed bright with grief and anger. "This is wrong. This is all wrong."

"This is survival," the owl replied. "This is reality."

"No." Lu spread her wings. "This is fear wearing reality's mask."

Before anyone could stop her, she launched herself into the sky. Her flowers blazed to life, creating trails of light between the islands. For a moment, she saw what Raven remembered: paths of connection, bridges of hope spanning the impossible gaps.

The response was immediate and violent.

Every island lit up with weapons. Arrows flew past her wings. Nets shot out to drag her down. Voices screamed warnings about attack, about invasion, about the end of everything.

"She's marking targets for raiders!" someone shouted.

"Bringing disease-light to poison our air!"

"Destroy the bridges before they solidify!"

Dark magic and arrows crackled across the sky, tearing through Lu's body like claws through silk. The pain sent her tumbling from the air, wings too hurt to hold her up.

She fell toward the empty space between islands, toward the killing drop that had replaced the bridges.

Then strong talons caught her.

Raven flew with powerful wingbeats, carrying Lu away from the chaos above. They glided down to a hidden ledge on the underside of the smallest island, where the other creatures couldn't see them.

"Why did you save me?" Lu gasped, her whole body aching from the attack.

"Because someone should have saved Pip." Raven set her down gently, her movements careful and practiced. "Because I remember what it felt like when the islands were connected. When help was possible."

"But you won't try to rebuild the bridges?"

Raven's laugh was hollow. "I was a bridge-builder once. My whole family were. We spent generations perfecting the art of connecting impossible things." She gestured at the empty air around them, her voice heavy with the weight of a lifetime's work destroyed. "The Winds came and whispered that our bridges made everyone vulnerable. That connection meant weakness. That safety lay in isolation."

"You could build them again."

"With what?" Raven spread her wings, and Lu could see they were scarred and damaged from years of being branded as dangerous. "They exiled all the bridge-builders as 'security risks.' Destroyed our tools, burned our plans. Said we were dangerous dreamers who put everyone at risk with our 'naive faith in cooperation.'" Her voice carried the bitter knowledge of being punished for competence. "Decades of careful work, dismissed as if expertise was a threat rather than a gift."

Lu looked up at the islands floating alone in their fear. "So now people just... die?"

"People die," Raven agreed. "Healers hoard knowledge. Children grow up never meeting anyone from outside their tiny island. Fear spreads faster than medicine ever did." She tucked her damaged wings close to her body. "And maybe that's just how the world is now. Maybe I was the naive one for thinking connection was possible."

Lu felt something breaking inside her chest. Not her magic, but something deeper. The stubborn hope that had carried her this far began to crack like ice under too much weight.

"Maybe they're right," she whispered. "Maybe I am just a dangerous dreamer. Maybe kindness really is just weakness wearing a pretty mask."

She looked at her flowers, already beginning to wilt in the thin air. At her wings, still aching from the attack. At the impossible space between the islands that would never be bridged again.

For the first time since leaving the Deep Groves, Lu wondered if she was fighting for something that had never really existed. If the connections she remembered were just children's stories, and the isolation around her was the only truth that mattered.

Above them, the islands floated in their perfect, terrified solitude, and Lu felt more alone than she ever had in the gray wasteland of the Between-Space.

For months now, you've been with me on this journey: reading excerpts from my eighteen-year-old self, following the stories of graduation anxiety, ice cream shop memories, crushes that felt like earthquakes, and dreams that stretched far beyond the borders of Lagoa Dourada. You've witnessed me in conversation with that girl I used to be, finding tenderness for her intensity, her longing, her beautiful, aching hope.

What I didn't expect was how those diary entries would start humming.

How a diary became songs

It started with a single line from March 1998: "I want to hide in the corners of myself." As I typed those words for one of my early posts, a melody surfaced, almost like a lullaby I might have sung to that anxious teenager.

Each song emerged from this same process: a memory, a feeling, sometimes just the mood of a particular diary page. Sometimes they would grow from entries about imagination and play, sometimes from raw, complicated family dynamics and finding my voice in the world while navigating internal conflicts and many, many dreams that I could not contain inside myself.

When the songs were ready to grow beyond lyrics and humming, AI helped me give them the voices and melodies they were asking for.

This isn't a concept album exactly, but it is a conversation album. Each track speaking to a different post I wrote, and being part of growing up and growing into myself.

From the Beginning exists because that eighteen-year-old girl in Brazil was brave enough to write everything down. It exists because, twenty-six years later, I was brave enough to read it all back. But mostly, it exists for anyone who has ever felt like their teenage self was too intense, too much, too tender for this world.

You weren't too much. You were exactly who you needed to be.

This album is my attempt to create the soundtrack I wish I'd had then: songs that say it's okay to feel everything, that growing up doesn't mean leaving your younger self behind, that there's profound beauty in the messy, magnificent process of becoming who you are.

The Spring of Clarity lay in the valley below, but it looked nothing like the sacred waters she remembered from the old stories. What should have been a place of peaceful gathering was now surrounded by high metal fences topped with cruel spikes. Guard towers rose at each corner, and long lines of desperate creatures waited outside the gates.

Signs hung everywhere: "Water by permit only." "Payment required in advance." "No charity cases."

Lu landed behind a cluster of rocks and watched the scene unfold. A family of what looked like deer-mice approached the main gate, their young ones drooping with thirst. The guard, a large, moss-covered creature, shook his head and pointed to a price board covered in numbers too high for most to afford.

The family trudged away empty-handed.

Lu's heart ached. Springs like this had once been free to all. Her grandmother had told her stories of the great gatherings, where creatures from every realm would come to drink from waters that healed both body and spirit.

"Terrible sight, isn't it?"

Lu spun around. The moss-covered guard stood behind her, having approached so quietly she hadn't heard him. Up close, she could see he was made of living stone and plant matter, like a walking garden that had learned to feel sad.

"You're the guard," Lu said, flowers blooming nervously at her feet.

"I'm Moss. And yes, I guard this place." His voice was heavy as earth after rain. "Though guarding and protecting aren't the same thing anymore."

"You don't seem happy about it."

Moss looked back at the spring, where more families were being turned away. "Happy? No. But a creature's got to survive. And the Merchant Guild pays well for those willing to keep the desperate away from what they need."

"The Merchant Guild?"

"They own the spring now. Bought it fair and square, they say, though I remember when nobody owned water any more than they owned air." Moss settled onto the ground beside her, his movements careful and tired. "I used to be a spring-keeper. Spent my days making sure the waters ran clean and free for all who needed them."

Lu stared at him. "You were a keeper? Like me?"

"Different kind. I tended the threshold between thirst and satisfaction, between sickness and health." His mossy shoulders sagged. "Until the Winds came and whispered that sharing was foolish. That kindness was weakness. That resources were scarce and only the strong deserved to drink."

"But the springs aren't scarce. Water flows from the earth freely."

"Ah, but that's the clever part." Moss pointed to the pipes and pumps that surrounded the natural spring. "The Guild doesn't control the water itself; they control access to it. They've built their barriers so close to the source that creatures can't reach it without going through their gates. Then they spread fear about 'contamination' and 'proper management' until people believe they need the Guild's permission to drink."

Lu felt a familiar chill. The same surgical precision she'd seen at the Archive, the same targeted destruction of connection she'd witnessed in Wellspring. "The Guild works with the Harsh Winds?"

"Works with them? Child, they profit from them." Moss's laugh was bitter as winter bark. "Every community the Winds divide creates more desperate families needing water. Every friendship they poison means fewer places for people to help each other. The more isolated and afraid people become, the more they're willing to pay for what used to be free."

The realization hit Lu like cold water. "They're not just profiting from the division. They're helping to create it."

"Now you're understanding." Moss stood slowly, his rocky joints creaking. "The Guild sends their people to struggling communities, whispering about scarcity, about the need to 'protect resources from outsiders.' They offer to 'manage' essential services for a fee. Before long, neighbors stop sharing wells, villages stop helping each other, and everyone comes crawling to the Guild."

Lu stared at the spring, seeing it with new eyes. The natural water still flowed as pure and endless as ever. But the barriers around it turned abundance into artificial scarcity, connection into isolation, gift into commodity.

"I have to try something," she said.

"Don't." Moss's voice was sharp. "I know that look. I used to have hope like that. But the Guild's barriers aren't just metal and stone: they're soaked in the Winds' poison. They'll turn your own magic against you."

But Lu was already moving. She spread her wings and flew toward the spring, landing just outside the fence. Flowers bloomed where her paws touched the ground, their light reaching toward the trapped water.

For a moment, she felt the spring respond. The water pulsed with recognition, remembering what it meant to flow free. Her flowers grew brighter, their roots stretching toward the source.

Then the barriers flared to life.

Pain shot through Lu's body as her own flower-light was twisted back on itself. The metal fence hummed with dark energy that took her gift of connection and turned it into isolation, her healing into hurt. She gasped and fell backward, her flowers withering to ash.

"Lu!" Moss was beside her in an instant, his strong arms lifting her away from the fence. "I warned you. The Guild's magic feeds on hope and uses it as fuel for despair."

Alarms began to wail. Guard towers lit up with harsh spotlights that swept the area where Lu had fallen. Voices shouted orders to find the intruder.

"This way," Moss whispered, carrying her into the maze of rocks behind the spring. They moved quietly through passages he clearly knew well, until the shouts faded behind them.

He set her down in a hidden cave, where the rock walls wept clean water from hidden springs the Guild hadn't found yet.

"Drink," he said gently. "The water here still remembers freedom."

Lu cupped the precious liquid in her paws and felt her strength return. But the pain of having her magic turned against her lingered like a bruise on her spirit.

"Come with me," she said suddenly. "You know these places, know how the systems work. You could help me find others, help me understand how to fight this."

Moss shook his great head. "I'm done fighting, Lu. I spent years trying to protect the springs, trying to keep the old ways alive. All I managed to do was watch everything I loved get bought and sold and poisoned." He gestured toward the distant lights of the Guild's compound. "Now I take their money and do their work because at least that way I survive. At least that way I don't starve."

"But you helped me."

"One small kindness doesn't make me a hero." His voice was heavy with shame. "I'll keep taking their coin tomorrow, and the day after that, because I've forgotten how to believe things can change."

Lu looked at this broken keeper, this creature who had once tended the threshold between thirst and satisfaction, and saw what she could become if she let the world's poison into her heart.

"The water here still remembers," she said softly. "Maybe you can too."

She left a single flower by the hidden spring before she flew away. Not bright enough to be seen from outside, but strong enough to remind Moss that some things refused to be bought or broken or forgotten.

As Lu followed the pull northward, leaving the lights of the Guild compound behind, she carried with her a deeper understanding of what she faced. The Harsh Winds weren't just destroying connection: they were systematically building the very systems that profited from division.

But she also carried hope. Hidden in caves and secret places, the old waters still flowed free. And sometimes, even broken keepers remembered enough kindness to help a stranger escape.

The pull grew stronger with each wingbeat, drawing her toward whatever waited beyond the mountains. Toward answers, perhaps. Or toward others who hadn't yet forgotten how to fight for what flowed free.

I think you knew this long before the world gave you permission to live as someone who favored beauty over logic, symbols over spreadsheets. You never pretended to be interested in what didn’t move you, and even at seventeen, you understood that life (at least the parts that matter) can’t be measured with precision. “I’m so tired of being good. I just want to be free.”
You wrote that one in the margins, as if it was a second thought. And maybe that’s why it landed when I found it again. You were already starting to see the cost of constant goodness: the way it required you to shrink, to monitor yourself, to stay small so that others could stay comfortable. But you also knew that something inside you didn’t want to live that way. You didn’t stop being kind, but you stopped equating kindness with silence. And little by little, you found your own version of freedom.

You didn’t have the full picture.

The pull led Lu north for two days before she smelled the smoke.

At first she thought it was just cookfires from another village. But as she flew closer, the smell grew bitter and wrong. Not wood burning, but something more precious. Something that should never burn.

The Archive of Empathy rose from the valley below like a great tree made of stone and glass. Once, it must have been beautiful. Lu could see the graceful spires reaching toward the sky, the wide windows that would have let in golden light. But now smoke poured from those same windows, and orange flames licked at the walls.

Creatures scurried around the base of the building, carrying armloads of books. But they weren't saving them: they were feeding them to the fires.

Lu landed hard in the courtyard, her wings folding tight against her back. A flower bloomed beneath her paws, but she barely noticed. She was too busy staring at the horror in front of her.

"No," she whispered. "No, no, no."

Books lay in burning piles everywhere. Their pages curled and blackened as the flames ate through stories that had taken lifetimes to write. She could see titles turning to ash: "The Art of Listening," "Building Bridges Between Hearts," "Why Kindness Matters."

"You there!" A sharp voice cut through the crackling of flames. "Fox creature! Move along. Nothing here for outsiders."

Lu turned to see a tall, thin creature with owl-like features and ink-stained talons. Behind her stood a group of mixed beings: some bird-folk, some mammal-kin, all wearing identical gray sashes.

"What are you doing?" Lu's voice came out smaller than she meant it to.

The owl-creature's round eyes narrowed. "Cleaning. Removing dangerous materials that poison young minds with weakness."

"Books about kindness aren't dangerous."

"Aren't they?" The owl stepped closer. "Books that teach creatures to trust strangers? To share resources with those who haven't earned them? To put others' needs before their own families'?" She gestured at the burning piles. "The Winds opened our eyes to the truth. These pretty stories make us vulnerable. Make us weak."

Lu watched a small picture book curl into flames. Its cover had shown two different creatures sharing a meal. Now it was just ash.

"There must be someone here who disagrees," Lu said desperately. "Someone who remembers why these books mattered."

The owl-creature's laugh was harsh. "The old librarians tried to hide books in the basement. Tried to claim they were 'preserving knowledge for future generations.'" She spat the words like they tasted bad. "But we found their secret rooms. We found all their hidden kindness."

"Where are they now?"

"Gone. Transferred to places where they can do useful work instead of filling heads with dangerous dreams."

Lu felt sick. But then she noticed something. One of the creatures carrying books—a small badger-like being with gentle eyes—kept glancing at her. When their eyes met, the badger gave the tiniest shake of her head. So small that only someone watching carefully would see it.

"I understand," Lu said to the owl-creature. "Thank you for explaining."

She walked toward the edge of the courtyard, letting her flowers bloom behind her. The badger saw the trail of light and followed.

They met behind a stone wall, away from the burning.

"I'm Kira," the badger whispered. "I was one of the librarians."

"Lu. I'm... I was a Keeper of Thresholds."

Kira's eyes widened. "I thought your people were all gone."

"Most are. Maybe all but me." Lu's voice caught. "Are you really helping them burn the books?"

"I have to. They watch us constantly. But..." Kira looked around, then leaned closer. "I've been saving what I can. Not the books themselves—they search our belongings every night. But I can remember. I can hold the stories here." She tapped her chest.

"You memorize them?"

"Every word. Every picture. It's not enough, but it's something." Kira's eyes were bright with unshed tears. "I was hoping to find other librarians, other places to plant these memory-seeds. But they've burned every archive in the northern territories."

Lu felt something cold settle in her stomach. "Every archive?"

"All of them. And it's not random, Lu. They always start with the same books. Stories about cooperation. Histories of different groups working together. Children's tales that teach sharing and kindness." Kira's voice dropped even lower. "They're not destroying knowledge. They're destroying connection."

The realization hit Lu like a physical blow. In Wellspring, the Willowkin and Stoneward had been turned against each other. Here, the books that taught empathy were being burned. The Harsh Winds weren't random destruction.

They were surgical.

"The Winds know exactly what to target," Lu said slowly.

"Yes. And they're spreading faster than any of us realized." Kira reached into her fur and pulled out a small, ordinary-looking stone. "This was on the children's shelf. It's not valuable to them, just looks like a rock. But it's actually a memory stone. It holds one of the most important stories from our collection."

She pressed the stone into Lu's paw. "It's about a young Keeper of Thresholds who learned to build bridges between worlds. I thought... if you're really one of them... maybe you should have it."

Lu closed her paw around the stone. Warmth spread up her arm, and for just a moment she heard her grandmother's voice telling her the old stories. Stories about the first threshold-keepers, who had brought peace between warring realms not through force, but through understanding.

"I can't stay here much longer," Kira whispered. "They'll notice I'm gone. But Lu... there are others like me. Scattered across the territories. People who remember what we're losing. People who are saving what they can."

"How do I find them?"

"Look for the small kindnesses. The helpers. They won't announce themselves, but they're there." Kira's eyes filled with tears. "The Winds want us to think we're alone. But we're not. We're just... hidden."

A shout from the courtyard made them both freeze. "Kira! Where are you?"

"I have to go." Kira squeezed Lu's paw once more. "Remember: the story isn't over until the last person stops believing in it."

She hurried back toward the burning archive, her arms full of books destined for the flames.

Lu stayed behind the wall until the voices faded. Then she opened her paw and looked at the memory stone. It was warm and smooth, humming with contained stories.

The pull in her chest had grown stronger during their conversation. It pointed north still, but now she understood what she might find there. Not just her scattered family, but others who remembered. Others who were fighting to save connection in a world determined to destroy it.

Lu spread her wings and lifted into the air. Below her, the Archive of Empathy burned bright against the evening sky. But in her paw, she carried proof that not everything was lost.

Some stories were too important to let die.

As she flew north, following the pull that would lead her to whatever came next, Lu began to understand the true scope of what the Harsh Winds were trying to accomplish. They weren't just sowing discord—they were systematically destroying every tool that could bring people back together.

But they had missed something. They had missed the fact that some stories lived not just in books, but in hearts. That some connections were strong enough to survive even the harshest winds.

Lu clutched the memory stone close and flew toward the mountains, carrying hope in the form of an ancient tale about building bridges between impossible worlds.

There’s a myth that teenage girls are out of control.
I would like to offer my 1998 graduation as Exhibit A:
we’re only out of control when someone else is in charge.

In my final year of high school, I made sure I was elected to the student board that would organize our graduation ceremony.
Truth is, I didn’t even have to fight for it. Most people saw it as extra work.
I saw it as the only way to make sure things would be done right.

Also, my name helped.
My mom was a celebrated kindergarten teacher.
My dad, a feared high school history teacher with a legendary stare.
I had a reputation for speaking up, trusted I could run things.
And they were right.

The ceremony had two parts: first, a mass for the graduates.
Then the diploma delivery in the only event hall that hosted anything formal.
I had a say in both.

I needed the music to be perfect.
I needed candles, not balloons.

I needed angels on the invitations.
I needed something different.
And I needed, with every poetic fiber of my being, for Enya to be part of it.

The priest wasn’t thrilled about that.
He didn’t know what she was saying in her songs.
What if it was profanity?

I offered him Storms in Africa.
No lyrics, just sound and sky.
Still, he hesitated.

So I called for backup: my grandmother.
A devoted parishioner, the woman who sometimes hosted him for chicken dinner on Sundays.

She worked her Sunday magic.

I played it cool, but inside I was ecstatic.

By the time we reached the diploma ceremony, I was already glowing, and I still had my speech to give.

As the valedictorian (oradora), I had prepared something I believed in: a speech about how we get to reach for what we want and go get it.
I wore a black dress with a silver shimmer, like a starry sky.
My braces were still on.
My hair was doing its best.
And yes, Enya played.
More than once.

When I reached the podium for my speech, I ended with words that felt like everything I believed:

The programs were hand-folded, the candles flickered, and the music filled the room just as I imagined.

That night, I didn’t just graduate.
I pulled something off.

And maybe no one else noticed how carefully it had all been planned,
but I did.
And that was enough.
