Coronation, or Coroação in the original Portuguese, is the first song from a project I’m building on my own pace. It honors my inner child, and for this reason I’m choosing to write the originals in Brazilian Portuguese. This poem/song feels like a ceremony for my little one.
The lyrics arrived first, asking to be arranged. I wrote it on a Saturday morning when I felt a long cycle ending and blessings ready to be dropped at any moment. The memory that came with it was specific: being a small girl in Brazil, dressed in an angelic white satin dress my grandmother had sewn by hand, walking up to crown Our Lady on a May evening.
Forty years later, I feel it was the other way around. She was always crowning me.
You crowned The lady in blue Now she, little girl, Comes to crown you What you planted Became a garden Your heart has grown To hold so much love Bow your head One more time Receive the crown Of flowers, just for you Look at the little banners Dancing in the wind Listen to the little bells Ringing just for you The blue mantle The bouquet of roses Everything you offered Returns to you Bow your head One more time Receive the crown Of flowers, just for you A rain of petals A rain of petals For you, little girl For you
Coroação
Você coroou A dama de azul Agora ela, menina, Vem coroar você O que você plantou Virou jardim Seu coração cresceu Pra caber tanto amor Abaixa a cabeça Mais uma vez Recebe a coroa De flores pra você Olha as bandeirinhas Dançando no vento Escuta os sininhos Tocando pra você O manto azul O buquê de rosas Tudo que ofertou Volta pra você Abaixa a cabeça Mais uma vez Recebe a coroa De flores pra você Chuva de pétalas Chuva de pétalas Pra você, menina Pra você
